Singer McKnight
coming to town

HOPE you've got some leftover Christmas loot stashed away -- next month could be an expensive one. Janet Jackson is already scheduled to appear at Aloha Stadium Feb. 16 to do a live HBO special. Now Motown Records recording artist, songwriter and producer Brian McKnight has decided to make a stop in Hawaii.

MOTOWN RECORDS
Multiple Grammy nominee Brian McKnight will make his Hawaii debut Feb. 1 in the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom.

Tickets go on sale Saturday at all Ticket Plus locations for McKnight's first concert appearance in the islands at 8 p.m. Feb. 1. Instead of Pipeline or World Cafe, however, this five-time 2002 Grammy Award nominee chose the Sheraton- Waikiki's Hawaii Ballroom as his venue. That should make every seat a good seat, well worth the $25 and $35 ticket prices.

Speaking of Ms. Jackson, "Thousands of tickets are still available" for her concert, according to Aloha Stadium ticket office staff. If the $45 and $65 ticket prices are a little too steep, don't worry. At least three local radio stations are giving away tickets on the air. Call 526-4400 to charge by phone for either concert.

Get your drift on

Some people like to surf or work out at the gym. Others enjoy tossing back a few pitchers at a bar. On Saturday a few brave people will get in their cars and make them slide sideways for fun.

It's called drifting, and is best described as taking a corner hard and maintaining a controlled skid through the turn. Hawaii International Driving School vice president Tom Bryant and school teacher David Shimokawa partnered up last April to bring "Drift Session" to local speed demons at Hawaii Raceway Park. On the second Saturday of each month participants can practice their drifting from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a $10 entry fee (remember to bring your driver's license, too).

At 1:30 p.m. the cars line up for a drift competition on the HRP course with winners taking home cash, prizes and those all-important bragging rights until next month's session. If you're just watching the action, it'll cost five bucks to get in. Call 551-1164 for details or visit www.driftsession.com.

Screen gems

Ever thought about being in a movie?

Instead of spending this summer stuck at a boring office job or working in retail, you could have a chance to play the role of a limousine driver or a military commando in a major motion picture. Hey, it beats folding clothes for minimum wage ...

An open casting call is scheduled for 2 to 7 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel for the yet-to-be-named flick that's expected to star Bruce Willis. A few small parts are still available, and producers are also looking for extras, stand-ins and photo doubles.

Applicants are asked to be available for filming from March through the end of the summer. Call the casting hot line at 593-3737 for more information.

Blackjack's a bust

Last week, I let you know about Zanzabar's request to the Honolulu Liquor Commission to permanently operate a blackjack table at the nightclub on weekends. After holding off on making a decision for a week, the commission decided last Thursday to deny the request. Guess the table games will have to wait a while longer ...

Out and about

This weekend starts off with a couple of sure-fire bets for Hawaiian music fans. Jake Shimabukuro performs tonight at Chai's Island Bistro in the Aloha Tower Marketplace starting at 7 p.m. Jake is part of a Who's Who list of Hawaiian musicians performing at the restaurant. Be sure to check out Jerry Santos and brothers Roland and Robert Cazimero as they perform at Chai's during the week as well.

>> Tomorrow night, The Makaha Sons continue the "Hana Hou Hawaiian Music Series" with a performance at the Hawaii Theatre. Moon, John and Jerome are scheduled to take the stage at 8 p.m. for an evening of Hoku Award-winning music. Tickets are still available for $30. Call 528-0506 for reservations.

>> Friday also marks the opening of "Orange County," the latest movie from MTV Films, starring Colin Hanks as a high school senior trying to get into Stanford. (In case you didn't hear, Colin just happens to be Tom Hanks' son.)

Every preview I've seen for this movie has cracked me up, usually due to co-star Jack Black's idiotic antics while wearing just his underpants. You may remember Black from last year's "Shallow Hal" or 2000's "High Fidelity." He's also half of the rock group/stand-up comedy act Tenacious D.

With a supporting cast of actors like Chevy Chase, Ben Stiller, Lily Tomlin and John Lithgow, I'm hoping the rest of this movie is as funny as the previews I've seen on television. Surf on over to starbulletin.com for online theater listings.

>> On Saturday, dig out some sleepwear from your dresser and head down to the "Pajama Party" at John Dominis' The Edge Nightclub. The Knight Group keeps the party going until 2 a.m. with drink specials all night. Just don't wear those ratty old pajamas with the stains on them, OK?

That's what's In the Mix for this week. Get at me if there's something going on in your neighborhood.
