‘Kini Popo’ expecting
a new arrival

NOT everything is gloom and doom for advertising-driven media.

Trade Publishing Co. President Carl Hebenstreit, who started his media career in Hawaii as radio personality "Kini Popo," is bringing back an old moldy goldie.

"Building Management Hawaii" will be a bimonthly publication aimed at members of Hawaii's Building Owners and Managers Association, the Hawaii Council of Associations of Apartment Owners, commercial property managers, resident managers, consultants and condomi- nium associations, said Hebenstreit.

"That magazine was sold and has returned to the company" after a three-year publishing hiatus, he said.

The publication will have a controlled circulation of about 5,000, meaning Trade will mail the magazine directly to industry members.

"Building management is certainly one of our biggest industries," he said.

"It ranks up there with the military."

That's where the editorial content and advertising come in.

Both functions will be served by the Tomczak Group, headed by Chet Tomczak, who has been named associate publisher.

Alden Kamaunu will serve as editor while Faith Freitas has been named advertising account executive.

Hebenstreit hopes to attract advertising from "anybody who is providing services or products to the people who are responsible for maintaining the property," including lawyers in the field, contractors, landscapers, developers and architects, to name a few.

Adding a publication and staff is "running a bit against the current and frankly we're running a little scared," Hebenstreit said.

However, "sales were up last year from previous years. It says a lot for the staff and also says something for the construction industry.

"If there's anything wrong with the economy somebody says 'Let's create some projects,'" he said.

"There are a lot of solid things happening," he said. "With this war going on the military is not going to suffer in Hawaii." Hebenstreit spoke of construction activity on Ford Island, "and more is coming, so this is an industry that is being supported."

While the building management magazine targets a different audience of readers and advertisers, he said the overlap lies in potential remodeling, upgrading "and just staying up with regulations."

Trade publishes several other magazines and annual guides such as "BIDService Weekly," "Hawaii Hospitality" and "Construction Preview."
