Judge puts brakes
on speed demon

All this talk of hidden vans secretly photographing our license-plate numbers so we can be mailed speeding tickets reminds me of the time I fought the law, and the law won.

Not only was I busted red-handed for speeding, I was doing double the posted limit. I was going 10 mph in a 5 mph zone. Let me spell that out: ten in a five. I went to court, confident that the judge would see things my way.

Wrong. He threw the book at me. Doesn't matter that I was within the fudge factor, I was still doing double the limit, and admitted it. I was a scofflaw, no error. Big fine and points. Ouch.

I mentioned this later to a policeman friend and he guffawed, "Hah! You went to Kaneohe courthouse, didn't you?"

Why, yes.

"If you're going to drive crazy like that, make sure you do it in some other district."
