Punahou holds off
St. Louis in ILH

Punahou took an early lead and held off a St. Louis rally to secure a 50-42 Interscholastic League of Honolulu victory last night.

Dane Uperesa led Punahou (2-0) with 15 points, while Kynan Pang scored 14.

St. Louis' Jason Rivers hit three 3-point shots and finished with a game-high 17 points for the Crusaders (1-1).

The Buffanblu jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 13-2 first quarter run and led 24-18 at halftime.

The Crusaders cut their deficit to three early in the fourth quarter, but the Buffanblu hit seven of nine free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the win.

Punahou visits defending league champion Iolani Friday.

Iolani 72, Maryknoll 38: Derrick Low and Bobby Webster scored 14 points each as the Raiders rolled past the Spartans.

Maryknoll stayed with Iolani, ranked first in the latest Hawaii Sports Network Top 10 poll, in the first quarter and trailed 13-10 after the opening period. But Iolani took control with a 29-5 run in the second quarter.

Jon Grobe contributed to the Raider rout with 13 points, while Bobby Nash added nine. Maryknoll's Sean Ortiz drained three 3-point shots and finished with a team-high 13 points.

Kalaheo 39, Moanalua 33: Ikaika Alama-Francis led all scorers with 17 points as the defending state champion Mustangs held off a challenge from the host Menehunes.

Moanalua, led by Chris Beck's 12 point performance, outscored Kalaheo 13-12 in the second half, but couldn't catch the Mustangs, who improved to 2-0 in the OIA East.

Kalaheo, which nailed 10 3-pointers against Castle on Thursday, failed to connect from beyond the arc against Moanalua.

Kalaheo will play its first home game since early December when it hosts Kaiser on Jan. 9. Moanalua (0-2) faces Farrington on Jan. 11.

Kailua 55, Farrington 51: Taleki Mailau hit four 3-point shots and finished with 15 points to help the Surfriders improved to 2-0 in the OIA East.

Kailua erased a 25-22 halftime deficit by outscoring Farrington 21-8 in the third quarter.

Farrington's Jason Domingo led all scorers with 16 points. Kekoa Sniffen scored 11 for Kailua.

Kaimuki 52, Kahuku 49: Richy Miyasaka scored six of his 10 points in the fourth quarter, and hit the clinching free throw with six seconds left as the host Bulldogs edged the Red Raiders.

Jesse Wong led Kaimuki with 17 points and hit four 3-point shots for the second consecutive game. He scored nine of the Bulldogs' 15 second quarter points to help Kaimuki take a 23-19 halftime lead.

Kahuku, led by James Kammerer's 17 points, cut the deficit to two points late in the contest, but Miyasaka's free throw iced the game for Kaimuki.

Kaiser 45, Kalani 35: Drew Gregerson electrified the Kaiser faithful with a dunk to open the game and led the Cougars to a win over their East Oahu rivals.

Gregerson's 13-point performance helped offset the hot shooting of Kalani's Robert D'Amato. D'Amato hit three 3-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points.

Kaiser's Jason Peters finished with 12 points for the Cougars.

The Knights connected on 13 of 18 free throws in the final quarter to hold off Roosevelt. Anthony Holyfield led all scorers with 19.
