"Other Oceans," photographs by Wayne Levin, essays by Bruce Carlson and Frank Stewart (University of Hawaii Press, $19.95)

Levin, the fabulously talented photographer whose "Through a Liquid Mirror" won all sorts of book awards a few years ago, is back with a deeper meditation on man's relationship with the ocean. In "Mirror," man was often seen as a part of the ebb and flow; here, man is trying to contain the sea in a variety of aquatic and diving experiences. It's a complex visual dialectic he's shooting for here. The essays are particularly good as well, but you're here for the images. The book is well printed with a boundless depth to the black-and-white images.

"Listen to your Body -- The Wisdom of the Dao," by Bisong Guo and Andrew Powell (University of Hawaii Press, $39 and $19.95)

The charming volume examines the fundamentals of the qi doctrine of ancient Chinese medicine and how you can use these principles to pump up your own health and well-being. Other passages include how to relax and applying natural medicine to the strictures of everyday life. Guo (an acupuncturist) and Powell (a psychotherapist) do an admirable job of shoehorning 5,000 years of medical folklore into 160 pages and have room left over for cute illustrations.
