Jaws’ tow-in contest
waits for bigger waves

Star-Bulletin wire services

The Tow-In World Cup of surfing at Jaws on Maui was postponed yesterday when the expected huge waves didn't materialize.

The event won't begin today either, because the next extra-large swell isn't expected for another five-to-seven days.

"We are here to make a great contest with big waves and epic conditions," said contest director Rosaldo Cavalcante. "The swell was slow to kick in, and it just wasn't what we really want to run in."

The invitation-only event is comprised of some of the best big-wave surfers in the world and requires 20-foot-plus waves with wave-face heights of 40-plus feet.

Instead of paddling into the huge waves, surfers holding a rope are towed in by teammates riding watercraft.
