JC quarterback
commits to Warriors

The Hawaii football team received its first letter-of-intent for this year's recruiting class yesterday when junior college quarterback Jason Whieldon signed on to become a Warrior.

Yesterday was the first day junior college athletes could make binding commitments (high school players may sign beginning Feb. 6). Whieldon had made a verbal commitment to UH last month.

Whieldon (6 feet 1, 190 pounds) is an all-conference selection from Saddleback (Calif.) Junior College.

Whieldon said he chose UH over New Mexico and Montana. He plans to attend UH next semester and participate in spring practice.

UH's other verbal commitments to date are Kailua High School offensive linemen Kahai LaCount, Marques Kaonohi and Samson Satele, Mililani linebacker Kaipo Patoc, Kahuku offensive lineman Kalavi Blanchard, and Kahuku defensive lineman Tala Esera.

Hawaii tops Seattle in swimming, diving

The Hawaii swimming and diving team beat Seattle University at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Tuesday.

The UH men defeated Seattle 129-83, while the Wahine stopped the Red Hawks 73-31.

UH diver Mike Gowdy, who previously qualified for the March 15-16 NCAA Zone Qualifying Meet at Stanford in the one- and three-meter events, beat his top qualifying score with a 309.35 in the one-meter on Tuesday.

Sarah Farr, another UH diver who also previously qualified for the Zone meet in the three-meter event, qualified in the one-meter with 267.55 points.

UH's Katie Shell placed first in the 500-freestyle swimming event with a time of 5 minutes, 2.42 seconds.

Cheyne Block won the 200 freestyle in 1:40.22.
