1988: Look out for female
optometrist ‘Men of the Year’

BACK in 1960-61, Hawaiian Air Lines got a favorable examiner's recommendation in the Transpacific Air Route case but lost out in the final award. This year, the same thing appears to have happened to Eastern Air Lines. In both cases the president of the airline was Arthur Lewis, who must be wondering. (Dec. 20, 1968) ... Elsa Johnston, who manages the Ala Moana Hotel's employee restaurant, is quite a punster. She suggests that her boss, Klaus Zander, food and beverage director the hotel, should be called Zander Klaus during the Christmas season. (Dec. 18, 1970) ...

TRIOS are nothing new to Dave Brubeck -- he had one for some time before Paul Desmond joined him in 1951 and the Dave Brubeck Quartet was born. But now those four fine musicians have gone their own ways and Brubeck has a trio again. When he appears Sunday and Tuesday with the Honolulu Symphony, he'll be joined by two rock musicians -- 16-year-old Daniel Brubeck and 19-year-old Christopher Brubeck on bass and drums. His sons are not part of his regular trio, but played with Brubeck when he performed his oratorio in Alaska, and will perform the work with him here. (Dec. 17, 1971) ...

WHEN Efrem Zimbalist Jr. dined at the Ranch House Sunday night, he enjoyed himself so much he made reservations for party of 11 for last night. Maybe it was the fact his waitress, on reaching his table, quipped, "I was up with you until 2 this morning!" She was referring to an old movie that was on TV, of course. (Dec. 20, 1977) ...

DON HO speechless? Not very often, to be sure, but he was at the final Saturday night show at his International Market Place club. The Aliis, wanting to make their final Saturday night with Ho a memorable one for him, hired Rindy Martin of Peel-A-Gram to show up in her banana suit and, well, peel for him. She did, too, right down to her G-string, placing her bra on Ho's head. "He looked like a World War I fighter pilot," quipped one wag. "He WAS," deadpanned another. Though Ho was speechless during the peel, he proved he could always get the last word by doing an impromptu strip himself, divesting himself of all but his shorts. Jack Cione, who's promoted many a burlesque show, would have felt right at home if he'd been there. (Dec. 22, 1981) ...

JUST back from San Francisco is Mrs. Elwin Perry, mother of former KKUA deejay Celeste Perry, who's now with KSFO in the Bay area. Naturally, mom wanted to hear her daughter, so she tuned in at the appropriate hour and heard fellow deejay Jim Lange introduce her. "And now, here's Celeste Holm." Gotcha, Jim. (Dec. 16, 1982) ... Leading the caroling and an old-fashioned Hawaii songfest at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel's annual reception for its Big Isle "family" last week were two of Hawaii's leading ladies of song: Nina Kealiiwahamana and Irmgard Aluli, who brought along her family quartet, Puamana. For Irmgard and the Rev. and Mrs. Abraham Akaka -- three of a handful of Honolulu guests -- it was a meaningful reunion. They were among the exclusive group who 19 years ago opened the Kohala Coast resort for Laurence Rockefeller. Naturally, Irmgard sang the song she wrote for the hotel's opening in 1965. (Dec. 19, 1983) ...

WE might have guessed -- the emcee for next Sunday's 3-mile MADD DASH, to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving -- is none other than Channel 9's own Dash, Howard Dashevsky. (Dec. 21, 1987) ... The Hawaii Optometric Association has chosen its "Man of the Year," and the winner is Dr. Jan Hirakawa. She's the second woman the organization has chosen for the award, the first being Dr. Kathy Ishimoto some years ago. This is the same organization that once had as its head the well-named Dr. Y.K. Look. (Dec. 22, 1988) ...
