205 executive and managerial
positions will be affected by
the restructuring move

All 205 executives and managers at the University of Hawaii received notices yesterday that the university will not renew their appointments unless they are notified otherwise by Dec. 16, 2002.

Another 43 open nonunion positions will not be filled.

The notices, signed by UH President Evan Dobelle, said that employees could be affected in a variety of ways, such as reorganization within or across the academic and administrative units, normal attrition, contract renegotiations, early retirement incentives or direct elimination of certain positions.

Dobelle will meet with the executives and managers in February.

Dobelle said the notices are not "pink slips," but rather a way to provide him the flexibility to restructure and realign personnel.

In a statement released yesterday, Dobelle said he has been through this restructuring four times in the past, and twice no jobs were lost.

"In one the result was, in fact, an increase in administrative personnel, although totally reorganized for effectiveness and an end to bureaucratic morass," he said.

The letters did not come as a surprise to the employees, who were informed of the action through the media last month.
