NFL Hawaii

Fuamatu-Ma‘afala starts,
scores TD

Pittsburgh running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala got his first start of the year due to Jerome Bettis' injury, and he rushed for 50 yards on 21 carries.

The former St. Louis School and University of Utah running back also scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter in the Steelers' 18-7 victory over the New York Jets yesterday.

In addition, Fuamatu-Ma'afala made one catch for minus-8 yards.

Jeff Ulbrich, 49ers: The starting linebacker (Hawaii) made nine tackles, including five solo stops, in San Francisco's 27-14 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Kimo von Oelhoffen, Steelers: The starting defensive end (Molokai High School/Boise State) made three tackles with one solo in Pittsburgh's win.

Olin Kreutz, Bears: The starting center (St. Louis School/University of Washington) and the rest of the Chicago offensive line didn't allow a sack in a 17-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers. But the Bears' offense sputtered, gaining just 193 scrimmage yards.

Chris Naeole, Saints: The starting guard (Kahuku High School/University of Colorado) and his teammates on the offensive line helped the Saints to 405 yards of balanced offense in a 28-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, but the line also allowed three sacks on quarterback Aaron Brooks.

Kynan Forney, Falcons: The starting guard (Hawaii) and his linemates made room for quarterback Chris Chandler to pass for 233 yards in the loss to the Saints, but they also gave up nine sacks.

Jason Elam, Broncos: The place-kicker (Hawaii) booted field goals of 42 and 20 yards and two extra points in Denver's 20-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Itula Mili, Seahawks: The backup tight end (Kahuku High School/Brigham Young) subbed for starter Christian Fauria and played on special teams in Seatle's loss.

Dominic Raiola, Lions: The backup center (St. Louis School/University of Nebraska) played on special teams in Detroit's 15-12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Three NFL players with Hawaii ties are on injured reserve -- offensive tackle Adrian Klemm (Hawaii) of the New England Patriots and defensive linemen Ma'a Tanuvasa (Mililani High School/Hawaii) of the San Diego Chargers and Mario Fatafehi (Farrington High School/Kansas State) of the Arizona Cardinals -- while offensive lineman Kaulana Noa of the St. Louis Rams is on the inactive list.
