State Rep. Terry Yoshinaga, (D, McCully, Moiliili, Pawaa), has resigned as chairwoman of the House Labor and Public Employment Committee.

Legislature 2001 House Speaker Calvin Say made the announcement at yesterday's weekly Democratic caucus meeting, according to House leaders.

Yoshinaga could not be reached for comment.

She is a former senior counsel for BHP Petroleum and is now in private practice.

Yoshinaga, 51, was first elected in 1994.

State Rep. Ed Case said Yoshinaga was having trouble keeping the support of her committee.

"She faced dwindling support for her continued chair of the committee for a variety of reasons," Case said.

"As the need for change became more compelling, it became much more important to have chairs to lead the way under difficult circumstances," Case said.

"Eventually there was a mutual recognition that maybe we need to move on with a different chair," Case said.
