Pearl Harbor trip brings
fresh wounds from NYC

THE horrible terror visited upon New York on Sept. 11 isn't likely to go away easily. Witness the group of 600 widows, children and family members of rescue workers at the World Trade Center who are enjoying a Hawaiian visit courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines and various hotels. Their visit coincides with the marking of the 60th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, and they've all been invited to attend ceremonies of Pearl Harbor survivors Friday, Dec. 7, at Punchbowl National Cemetery ... Meanwhile, the local chapter of The Compassionate Friends is holding a candle-lighting vigil Sunday in memory of Hawaii children who have died and those who were lost on Sept. 11. It takes place in the courtyard of La Pietra at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 is also National Children's Memorial Day. Dave Pellegrin is president of the local organization. His son, George, died 10 years ago ...

THE Pentagon officer who was honored by Gov. Ben Cayetano for his performance on Sept. 11, Isaac Hoopii, showed he's a man of many talents. He took the stage at Don Ho's Island Grill the other night and played guitar ... We probably won't be getting a lot of Canadian tourists from the Brockville area. The Brockville Recorder & Times reported, "Dengue fever outbreak kills 72" in Hawaii. It was listed as an Associated Press story, which AP should find interesting if not disturbing ... Travis Branch is looking at the old Hang Loose Juice location on Queen St. with the intention of opening a vegan take-out eatery including vegetarian burgers -- all but next door to McDonald's between Alakea and Richards streets ...

Here's Howie

PROMOTER Tom Moffatt has booked comic Howie Mandel to appear Dec. 29 in Don Ho's showroom in the Waikiki Beachcomber. I got a new appreciation for Howie after watching him play annoying people on the Jay Leno "Tonight Show." My suggestion to him would be to go out into Waikiki and be filmed annoying people and then show the results during his show. Howie is also guesting on the Regis Philbin show all this week ...

HIGH point in the birthday celebration for local businessman Ed Reinhart came as the birthday boy was blowing out the candles on his cake. Pal (?) Frank Denton shoved Reinhart's face directly into the cake. He may be 65 now, but some people choose not to grow up ... I ran into adman Marty Schiller the other day and was surprised for a number of reasons. His signature suit had been replaced by a denim shirt, his beard had been shaved off and his hair was seriously gray, bordering on white. But he could still manage a chuckle when I asked if the Hair Care for Men stock was plummeting ...

Cho 'nuff

IT was quite a sight when a foursome, dressed in leather and gold chains, showed up Saturday night at the Hawaii Theater where the Jim Nabors Christmas show was on tap. They eyed the clientele entering the theater and then approached theater manager Burton White to ask what show was playing. When he said "Jim Nabors," they knew they'd blown it and headed immediately to the Blaisdell to see the show they had in mind, the most UnNaborly naughty comic, Margaret Cho ...
