From Bordeaux in ’78 to
doctor’s office in ’01

ONE of my doctors at Kaiser booked an appointment for me with another doctor, Dr. Richard Siegel. I was ushered to an examination room, and when the doctor came in, he had this funny smile on his face when I introduced myself. "Do I know you?" I asked, sensing I must. Turns out we'd met when we both stayed at Chateau Bellgrave in Bordeaux, France, in 1978. His then-wife even took a photo of us sitting in a sidewalk cafe in Paullic. I asked him to forgive me if I failed to remember him, but I hadn't seen him in 23 years. "I think I had more hair then," he deadpanned ...

YOU may have recognized the young woman who played a hospital administrator in Sunday night's "Law and Order." She was Penny Balfour, daughter of Straub Hospital's Dr. John Balfour. Her mother is also in showbiz: Yvonna Balfour is a wardrobe supervisor on Broadway. Who knows, maybe she'll be picking out a frock for Penny once again should she get a role on the Great White Way ... Real estate woman Chris Friese has devised a kind of therapy for herself. When not showing houses to potential buyers, she's indulging in a favorite pastime, painting. She was one of the artists featured in a show at Linekona Art Center, which is run by the Academy of Arts. Who knows, if she devotes the same energy to her painting as to her real estate sales, her next show may be in the Academy itself ...

NOW that Thanksgiving is but a happy memory for some of us, it's time for "Lunch With Santa," and we're not talking milk and cookies on Christmas Eve. The Old Spaghetti Factory at Ward Warehouse is holding six such lunches over the next three weekends, a benefit for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hawaii. Besides the food, the kids will also be amazed at the magic of Carlos da Silva II ...

Destiny's child

IS it any wonder that localite Marc Lincoln has been named exec chef of Morton's in Ala Moana Center? It seemed almost predestined from the time Marc was 8 years old and taken to Morton's Chicago for his sister's wedding rehearsal dinner. He remembers barely being able to handle the huge silverware -- 10-inch knives -- but nonetheless managed to cut and successfully put away his enormous steak, a 42-ounce Porterhouse. Now, 20 years later, Marc is the one cooking the steaks to order ...

SPEAKING of steak houses, Ruth's Chris in Restaurant Row is tying in with the hilarious Slava's Snowshow Dec. 20. Guests park free at Restaurant Row, dine at Ruth's Chris at 5 p.m., then catch a trolley to the Hawaii Theatre to laugh their heads off at Slava and his snowstorm, and trolley back to the Row. Cost for everything is $100 per person. Call 234-6552 for reservations ...

Grandpa's footsteps

Soccer maven Jack Sullivan couldn't be more proud of his grandson, 4-year-old Brendan Vroom, than if he were a soccer star. Brendan lives in San Mateo, but he can be seen gracing the window of Gymboree in a large poster at Kahala Mall. Grandpa himself is but 30 feet away, pictured on a poster for Kahalanui Retirement Home -- hint, hint. Uncle Jack is keeping track of young Brendan's appearances, such as in the West Coast Mervyn's and the Gap, and in Macy's catalogs ...
