Fab pops concert

Rosemary Clooney, with multi-talented Matt Catingub's arrangements for the Honolulu Symphony Pops orchestra and his hard-driving Copa Cat Pack big band, had crowds standing and yelling for more this weekend at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Rosemary is so overweight that she had to sit during her entire performance but that did not hurt her rich, million-dollar tone. She made her longtime fans happy singing songs such as "Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe" and "You Can't Take That Away From Me." Her duet with Matt, "You Got Class," was classy. The backing and solos by the musicians were tops. Matt and the Copa Cat Pack tore the place apart with their big, swinging selections to open the show. Swing dancers on stage sizzled. Hey Matt, grab Jimmy Borges to sing with the gang in a pops concert next season. Having Jimmy front the Pack would be a knockout ...

Chef Nick Sayada served a first-class picnic dinner for Carolyn's group. Artists Hiroshi Tagami and Michael Powell sold paintings at the event. ...

The Boots on the Beach event at the Royal Hawaiian this month netted $147,000 for the American Cancer Society. Jim Schuler gave cancer survivor Indru Watumull the Patty Schuler Recognition Award for her courageous cancer battle. Co-chairs were Carole Brooks and Dicey Brinck. Guests wore Western attire. Chuck Heitzman was emcee ...
