KIDS AND KIMONOS

Isle Japanese celebrate Children's Kimono Festival

FL MORRIS / FMORRIS@STARBULLETIN.COM
Courtney Hiraoka, 3, was dressed in a kimono by Kumi Sakai, left,
and Takako Higuchi yesterday during the 10th annual Shichi-Go-San
Children's Kimono Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii
in Moiliili. The Japanese festival celebrates the ages of 3 and 7, which
are considered lucky for girls, and age 5, which is said to be lucky for
boys. Children turning those ages dress in kimonos and visit a Shinto
shrine to be blessed.

Servco Pacific and Tesoro Hawaii were among the sponsors of the
5-kilometer dash to help Mothers Against Drunk Driving promote
a safe and sober holiday season.
