Wisteria, Angel Network team up to feed homeless

The Wisteria restaurant is teaming up with Angel Network Charities to help feed Oahu's homeless and hungry on Wednesday.

Angel Network representatives will be selling $5 "Angel" gift certificates from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m., valid from the time of purchase to Feb. 28 to buy food and beverages at the Wisteria.

All proceeds will go toward feeding the needy.

"With so many of our charitable dollars headed to help the victims of the Sept. 11th attacks on the East Coast, my wife and I felt it important not to forget the families here at home who have also been affected by the attacks," said Roy Asato, co-owner of the Wisteria.

"Whether you give Angel gift certificates to people who would like a meal out but can't afford one just now, use them yourselves or give them as gifts to friends or family, you'll still be helping people in need. Plus, they make great holiday office gifts or stocking stuffers," said Wisteria co-owner Jane Asato.

The Angel Network has sheltered more than 1,400 adults and children over the past 13 years and has helped homeless adults become self-sufficient and productive.

Senator hails departure of Maui hospital chief

WAILUKU >> State Sen. Jan Buen (D, West Maui-Molokai-Lanai) said she believes the morale at Maui Memorial Medical Center will improve with the departure of its chief executive, Boyd Kleefisch.

Kleefisch, 57, who served nearly three years as chief executive, resigned for family reasons, leaving Lanai Community Hospital Administrator John Schaumburg as his temporary replacement.

Buen, co-founder of a group that volunteers at the hospital, said morale dipped to the lowest she has ever seen after the administration replaced Director of Nursing Elaine Slavinsky. Buen said the hospital also has faced more competition from a surgical center in Kahului, contributing to a reluctance to proceed with $38 million in improvements.

Kleefisch was unavailable for comment.
