Silva rules Roxy again

Jaqueline Silva mastered the surf of Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park for the second straight year.

The Brazilian won the women's Roxy Pro again yesterday in 6- to 8-foot surf, moving her into first place in the Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) World Qualifying Series rankings.

"Surfing and winning here last year made it easier for me to do it again today," Silva said. "This year I knew how and where the waves break on the reef, so it was easier for me.

"The power of Hawaii makes it easier to surf," she said.

Silva is guaranteed a spot on the elite World Championship Tour in 2002.

Hawaii's Megan Abubo placed fourth.

"(This) has been a great preparation for me going into the final WCT event of the year next week at Honolua Bay (Maui)," Abubo said. "I haven't surfed a heat since ... May, so this event gave me the opportunity to get the nervousness and the jitters out and now I feel more prepared."

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly were eliminated in the semifinals.

In the men's G-Shock Hawaiian Pro, Kauai's Andy Irons scored the tournament's first perfect 10 in the third round.

Myles Padaca of Hawaii and Australian Steve Clements also had good days in the surf.

With a forecast of a drop in swell, the men may have today off. The tournament would continue tomorrow.

Christensen, a sophomore from Denmark, also turned in a sixth-place run at the NCAA meet in 1999.
