[DIVISION II VOLLEYBALL]

No. 500 sweeter
than cider

A coach has a pretty big pile of memories to sort through when she wins her 500th career match.

She remembers hundreds of athletes, more than a thousand games and a million special moments in practices. She also remembers the sticky consistency of apple cider.

Apple cider?

When Sharon Peterson won her 500th career match for Hawaii-Hilo -- a five-game thriller over Chaminade last Sunday -- it touched off a small celebration complete with balloons, a lei and a showering of apple cider.

"I would just say that 500 wins just reminds me of all of the memories, all of the wonderful years I've had with all of the wonderful players," Peterson said. "And I never will forget the sweet smell of apple cider."

Peterson may have needed the dousing to liven her up for the party, because as big a number as 500 is, she claims that she did not know of her accomplishment. She knew that it was coming up, but had forgotten while taking care of the business of helping a young team win seven of its last 10 matches.

During her post-match hug with Chaminade coach Glennie Adams -- who played her college ball under Peterson -- Peterson thought she heard her protege mention something about a 5-1 score being a crucial point in the final game. It dawned on her that Adams actually said "500th win" when a crowd descended upon her with congratulations.

"For that night I forgot about it," Peterson said. "My husband (Greg Mooers) probably knew about it, but I didn't."

The number put Peterson among only nine others on the Division II level who have reached the milestone and made her the first from Hawaii to join the list.

"A lot of them are coaches I've played with," said Peterson, who played on two U.S. Olympic teams. "It is nice to join them."
