Martin to
miss 2-4 weeks

Hawaii basketball player Phil Martin sprained his left ankle at yesterday's practice and is expected to be out 2-4 weeks.

The 6-foot-7 sophomore forward rolled his ankle on a teammate's foot with about 15 minutes remaining in the workout. X-rays last night proved negative and further diagnosis was to be made today.

"We'll know more when the doctor looks at it," Rainbow coach Riley Wallace said last night. "When he comes back all depends on pain. We'll lose an experienced player for a while, but we know he'll do everything he can to get back in shape as soon as he can."

Wallace expects to have senior forward Mindaugas Burneika practicing with the team either this afternoon or tomorrow. Burneika has been out with a strained left foot for the past two weeks.

Hawaii opens its season Nov. 16 at the Nike Tip-Off vs. Norfolk State.

St. Louis keeps its grip on state air riflery crown

St. Louis' dominance in high school sports isn't limited to just one sport.

The Crusaders captured their third state air riflery championship yesterday at Konawaena High School.

St. Louis topped Waiakea 2,094 to 2,004 for its third straight title.

Punahou's Kyle Quon won the individual title, but St. Louis' Eric Okamoto and Michael Tanoue finished second and third, respectively, to lead St. Louis.

Morris competes in international billiards

Rodney Morris is Hawaii's lone entrant in the Tokyo 9-Ball Tournament.

The former U.S. Open champion is competing against a field of 700 entrants for prize money totaling $800,000, including a first-place purse of $160,000.

The double-elimination first round is set to begin Nov. 11.
