Peterson notches win
No. 499 against Chaminade


Hawaii-Hilo coach Sharon Peterson won her 499th career game last night, guiding the Vulcans to a 30-20, 30-23, 19-30, 30-18 win over Chaminade at Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 3-8 while bringing the Silverswords down to meet them at 3-8.

Hawaii-Hilo used the combination of Megan Denman and Sara Pilgreen, as Denman dished out 47 assists and Pilgreen buried 15 kills.

Cherisse Shiroma, Emily Hutchinson and Elena Salvador each collected 11 kills for the Vulcans, who outhit Chaminade .258-.161.

Shiroma ruled the net for Hawaii-Hilo, tallying 10 block -assists in the effort and allowing her team to enjoy a 15-6 advantage in the category.

Julianne Hastert paced the Silverswords in kills with 16 while Valasi Sepulona added 13.

The teams will hook up again tonight in a non-conference match.

Hawaii men get a win in USA League tennis

The team representing Oahu in the men's bracket of USA League tennis at San Diego, Calif. finished 1-3 after beating Woodbury, N.Y. 2-1 yesterday.

Eugene McGeehan and Elijah Thomas won their match 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 and Wayne Abrigo and James Toguchi survived 4-6, 6-2, 1-0. Michael Kuro and Paul Leong lost their match 6-4, 6-2.

Vulcan golfers drop to 14th at Stanford

Hawaii-Hilo golfers Nick Mason and Tysen Shinaut are tied for 45th place after two rounds at the Nelson hosted at Stanford University.

Both ar at four over par.

Hawaii-Hilo is in 14th as a team, ahead of only Idaho.
