OIA volleyball playoffs
set to start on Thursday


The Oahu Interscholastic Association volleyball playoffs tip off on Thursday with eight matches.

In girls play, Kaiser hosts Campbell, Moanalua travels to Leilehua, Waipahu plays at Farrington and Roosevelt goes to Mililani in games that begin at 6 p.m.

On the boys side, Leilehua travels to McKinley, Mililani hosts Kahuku, Campbell plays at Moanalua and Roosevelt goes to Radford. All the boys games start at 7 p.m.

The top four seeds for the boys and girls have a bye in the first round.

Waianae won the Western Division for the girls and Kalani captured the East. Both schools finished the regular season with 10-0 records.

Kahuku and Pearl City also have first-round byes.

Moanalua is the defending girls champion.

Defending boys champion Kalaheo and Pearl City -- which is 10-0 and has claimed three of the past five titles -- won the East and West respectively. Farrington and Nanakuli finished second in those divisions.

The quarterfinal round of the playoffs is on Saturday, with the higher seeds hosting matches. The quarterfinal winners earn a spot in the state tournament.

The OIA semifinals are Oct. 31 and the finals and third-place matches are Nov. 2 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The boys state tournament is Nov. 8-10, while the girls play Nov. 15-17.

Diaz, Swart win Eastern cross country meet

Cheyenne Diaz of Castle High School and Ashley Swart of Kaiser were the boys and girls winners at the OIA Eastern Division Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Laie.

Diaz won in 16 minutes, 5 seconds, 48 seconds ahead of McKinley's Chad Dikilato.

McKinley won the boys team title, with Roosevelt finishing a distant second.

Swart paced the girls with a time of 12:39, five seconds better than Leonie Sugai of Castle.

The Kaiser team won, followed by Castle and McKinley.

Islanders to hold tryout in Wailuku, Maui

The Hawaiian Islanders continue their tryouts this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Wells Field in Wailuku, Maui.

"I believe this is the first time professional football has ever held tryouts on the Valley Isle," Islanders coach Guy Benjamin said.

Hawaii State Open this week at Makaha

The 28th Annual Hawaii State Open runs from tomorrow through Saturday at the Makaha Resort Golf Club. The purse this year is $58,000.

The Pro-Am is slated for tomorrow with the regular tournament starting on Thursday.

The field features 111 Aloha Section PGA professionals and amateurs from Hawaii, plus 25 participants in the Senior Men's Division and 18 in the Women's Division.

Included in the field are defending champion Kevin Hayashi, senior champion Dean Prince and women's champion Christel Tomori.

Turtle Bay Resort hosts annual USTA event

The 15th Annual USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Tennis Weekend is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Turtle Bay Resort.

Action starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the 7.5 Mixed Doubles Challenge. This event is slated to run until 5 p.m. Registration is required.

Other morning activities include an on-court clinic at 8 a.m., an introduction to racquet stringing at 10:30 a.m. and a coaches clinic at 11 a.m.

Afternoon activities include a junior hitting clinic at 1 p.m. and a free adult clinic at 3:30 p.m. The USTA/HPS Awards Banquet is at 6:30 p.m.

The Mixed Doubles Challenge continues on Sunday at 9 a.m.
