2001-2002 school year
brings many new faces

By Hauoli Young Bautista

Baldwin students, teachers and parents began the school year with new administrators, projects and teacher workshops.

Stephen Yamada stepped in as Baldwin's new principal after Principal Wallace Fujii retired. Fujii had served as the school's chief administrator for 22 years. Yamada had previously been a principal at Kalama Intermediate School.

"Education does not happen by accident," Yamada said. "Students do well at Baldwin because of good teachers, and students perform well in class and extracurricular activities."

Marcella McClelland, previously from Haiku Elementary School, is a new vice principal, assuming the position after the retirement of Janet Shimada, who also taught English at Baldwin.

With the retirement of Student Activity Coordinator Daphne Sing, former Peer Education Program teacher Donna Vierra has assumed the role of coordinator. New teachers have also joined Baldwin's staff.

Baldwin students, staff and parents learned the school received the maximum six-year term of accreditation from the Western Association of Schools & Colleges, the nationwide Accrediting Commission for schools.

Accreditation ensures that the school and its students, parents, teachers, administrators and community work together to help students achieve their best and attain school and state standards of learning.
