The body of a man who died in a house fire in Kapahulu was burned beyond recognition and will require dental records for positive identification, the Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office said.

A resident who escaped the fire at 3145 Duval St. identified the victim as a 22-year-old Hawaii Pacific University student from Guam. A third resident of the home was off island.

The victim apparently died while trying to escape, Honolulu Fire Department officials said. His body was found just inside the living room door where the roof had collapsed.

It is not known if the collapse prevented the man from escaping, HFD officials said.
