All Roads Lead to Elan

Elan, a 25-year-old Los Angeleno comes to town with a singing voice reminiscent of none other than the late, great Bob Marley. In fact, while Elan was putting together a series of studio sessions, he managed to get original Wailers guitarist Al Anderson to join in. The guitarist returned the favor by inviting Elan to tour as lead vocalist with the reunited Wailers band, a gig that lasted for three years. He's also shared the stage with other local favorites as Shaggy, Maxi Priest and Third World.

Now Elan is striking out on his own, singing his blend of reggae, pop, hip-hop and rock, promoting his London/Sire debut album (due Oct. 23), "All Roads," and its first single "I'm in Love With You Girl." His cover of Gregory Isaacs' "Dreams Come True" is also featured on the HBO hit series "Sex and the City" soundtrack.

Elan performed a short set last weekend at the Molokai Hoe beach celebration at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and those taken by him will have another chance to see him twice more in concert.

Aloun Farm's corn field maze, this year a tribute to
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, takes about an hour to complete.

Corn maze pays tribute to 'Bruddah IZ'

Once again, Aloun has turned a parcel of agricultural land into a maze built for fun, education and a shrine of sorts.

While past mazes have paid tribute to the land and ocean, this time the 5.2-acre field of corn has been cut to bear the image of the late Israel "Bruddah IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole, with a rainbow, ukulele and rays of sunshine in the background.

"This seemed like the perfect way to pay tribute to IZ," said the farm's general manager, Alec Sou. "Leeward Oahu was his home, and he truly represented the spirit of the 'aina."

Sou, a longtime advocate of diversified agriculture in Hawaii, got the idea of creating the maze to promote agricultural education and wholesome family fun.

The maze features more than 300,000 stalks in a 2.17-mile puzzle of twisting pathways and baffling switchbacks that generally take an hour to complete.

Every year there are a few claustrophobic souls who try to muscle their way through the maze rather than use patience and brain power. If this sounds like you, maybe you'll just want to wait outside for your friends, rather than spoil the trip for others by killing the plants.

And if you're tempted to harvest the corn, you may not want to bother as the corn used is not the sweet kind geared toward humans, but is the kind grown as cattle feed.

>> Place: Aloun Farms. To get there, take H-1 to Kapolei/Makakilo exit, turn left until you reach Farrington Highway, turn left onto the highway, driving about 2 1/2 miles.

>> Time: 4 to 10 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, 4 to 11 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 25.

>> Kama'aina admission: $8 for 12 and older, $5 for ages 6 to 12. Discounts available for families, school field trips and large groups.

>> Call: 677-6412.

Rennie Harris brings hip hop and Shakespeare together
at Leeward Community College Theatre.

Hip hop Shakespeare

Hip hop culture and a Shakespearean classic collide with the Hawaii premiere of Rennie Harris PureMovement in "Rome & Jewels," taking place at the Leeward Community College Theatre at 8 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 4 p.m. Sunday.

Critically acclaimed choreographer Harris has amassed an outstanding ensemble of hip hop dancers, musicians and video artists to bring the tale of "Romeo & Juliet" into a gritty urban world.

Harris' primary influence on this project included the films "West Side Story" and "Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet." The resulting creation tells the story of warring families on a stage bursting with projected video manipulations, and a cadre of musicians arranging beat box vocals, sampling and an original score.

The Montagues are a hip-hop gang who don fatigues, while the Capulets are b-boys (break dancers) who wear hoodies and skullcaps.

Rennie Harris, artistic director and choreographer of PureMovement, has pushed audiences to see hip-hop movement as a distinct dance form by taking it from the streets and clubs to the concert stage.

Harris was a co-creator and choreographer of "Cool Heat Urban Beat" which toured Hawaii two years ago.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students, seniors (60+) and active military. Tickets may be charged by calling the LCC Theatre box office at 455-0385.

'Aloha Liberty' poster

Photographer Kim Taylor Reece introduces the release of his new print, "Aloha Liberty" from 9 to 11 tonight at Restaurant Pier 7 next door to the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

The sepia-toned print features a halau dancer with her arms outstretched, set against a backdrop that features the Statue of Liberty and the American flag.

The event is a fund-raiser for the American Red Cross. Reece will be signing copies.

Proceeds from sales of the $55 posters -- the price will go up to $65 -- will go to other Hawaii nonprofits as well, supporting such causes as breast cancer research and women's shelters. Call 293-2000 for details.

A Splendored Thing

Designs by Takeo and Eric Chandler will be presented during the Chinese Women's Club of Honoluu's luncheon/fashion show, "A Splendored Thing," taking place at noon tomorrow in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Monarch Room.

Cathy Foy will perform and celebrity models will include Vicky Cayetano and her daughter Marissa Liu, KITV's Pamela Young and isle beauty queens.

Tickets are $40, available by calling 737-9046.
