50th bash lauds composer

"Great Performances: Andrew Lloyd Webber 50th Birthday Celebration" airs at 8 tonight on Hawaii Public Television.

Heading the cast at a sold-out Royal Albert Hall in London are Michael Ball, Antonio Banderas, Sarah Brightman, Glenn Close, Donny Osmond, Elaine Paige, and Kiri Te Kanawa, who offers the world premiere of a new Lloyd Webber song, "The Heart Is Slow to Learn."

Paige and Banderas, respective stars of the original stage production and film version of "Evita," sing songs from that blockbuster; Brightman and Ball perform original numbers from "Phantom" and "Aspects of Love"; and Glenn Close does a stunning re-creation of her "Sunset Boulevard" character.

Also spotlighted are excerpts from Lloyd Webber's latest production, "Whistle Down the Wind," performed by Bonnie Tyler, Boyzone and Lottie Mayor. Julian Lloyd Webber, the composer's younger brother, offers "Variations," based on themes by Paganini.
