HPU falls in 5 to Hilo to
end 42-match streak

The Hawaii Pacific volleyball team lost for the first time this century last night, falling in five sets to Hawaii-Hilo at Hilo.

The Vulcans stopped the Sea Warriors' 42-match winning streak with the 30-27, 16-30, 30-28, 27-30, 15-11 performance, leaving Hawaii Pacific four wins short of the all-time NCAA II mark of 46 set by Ferris State in 1984.

Hawaii Hilo (7-10, 2-7) earned just its second conference win this season while Hawaii Pacific (14-1, 8-1) dropped its first.

Hawaii Pacific outhit (.277-.219) and outset (70-68) the Vulcans but could not come back from a 2-1 deficit. Hilo had four players record double figures in kills, led by Tiffanie Ollison with 19. Sara Pilgreen and Emily Hutchinson each added 16 and Elena Salvador recorded 11 for Hilo.

Roberta Robert led the Sea Warriors with 24 kills, followed by Andrea Wean with 23.

The Vulcans outhit Hawaii Pacific .320-.182 in the fifth game.

Chaminade 3, Brigham Young-Hawaii 2: At Laie, the Silverswords continued their recent mastery of the Seasiders, winning for the third time this year 30-16, 22-30, 19-30, 30-24, 15-8.

Audrey Brady led Chaminade (6-7, 3-2) with 16 kills, matched by Ashley Moeai of the Seasiders (7-5, 3-4).

Rainbow Wahine win Willamette Invitational

The Hawaii Wahine cross country team captured first place at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. Hawaii totaled 42 points for the team win. Oregon, last year's top team, was second.

Senior Cheryl Smith finished first among 388 competitors in the 5K race with a time of 16-minutes, 56.33-seconds.

Senior Casey McGuire Turcotte ran a personal best time of 17:41.50 to come in sixth overall.

Krejci nets 2 tennis titles at ITA West Regional

Brigham Young University-Hawaii's Jan Krejci pulled off a double win at the ITA West Regionnal tournament yesterday in Davis, Ca. Krejci defeated doubles partner Peter Madarassy 6-1, 6-3 to win the men's single championship. Then he teamed with Madarassy to defeat Greg Lee and Yaro Vinogradsky of UC-Davis 9-7 for the doubles title.

Adrienn Hegedus outlasted Amy Sun 7-5, 6-3 for the women's championship.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate did not pitch in Pittsburgh's 13-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien product went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in Houston's 10-6 loss to St, Louis.
