Silly Monster Pencil

SUPPLIES

1-inch unpainted wooden bead
Bright green acrylic paint
Foam paintbrush
24 inches of brightly colored yarn
Low-temperature glue gun
6 inches black pipe cleaner
Pencil
Black-and-white acrylic paint
12 inches of 1/8-inch orange satin ribbon
Black fine-tip permanent marker

INSTRUCTIONS

Paint wooden bead and set aside to dry. Take the yarn and wrap it around about three fingers. Bunch and tie in the middle. Cut loops apart and glue the knotted end into one end of the bead. In the other end of the bead, glue one end of the chenille stem.

Wrap the pipe cleaner around the eraser end of the pencil. Using the end of the paintbrush handle, make dot eyes with white paint and let dry.

Make a loopy bow out of the orange satin ribbon. Glue to the neck of the monster where the bead meets the chenille stem. Make a small dot in the white dot, using the black paint.

Trim and fluff yarn hair. Use a fine marker to draw a squiggly line mouth.

Hearty Clay Pumpkin Pin

SUPPLIES

Hearty Clay in red, blue, yellow and white; and color chart
Toothpicks or scissors
Low-temperature glue gun
Pin back

INSTRUCTIONS

Using the color chart as a reference, take a very small amount of red and mix with the yellow Hearty Clay (available at craft stores) to create orange. Add white clay to lighten, if necessary.

Roll into a 1-1/4 inch ball. Flatten ball and form into a pumpkin shape. Use scissors or toothpicks to carve lines into the pumpkin.

Using the color chart, take a small amount of blue and mix with yellow to create a green shade. Roll into a 1/2-inch ball, then into a short log to create a stem. Attach it to the top of the pumpkin.

Roll more green clay into three small 1/4-inch balls. Flatten balls and shape into leaves. Take the rest of the green clay and roll it into long vines. Attach vines to the top of the pumpkin. Attach leaves to the vine. Let clay dry, then glue on pinback.

Table-toppers

Tables can be brightened up with party favors, such as these spoons. For the simplest spoon, make a bat as shown. More ambitious crafters could try "Wanda Witch."

AIRBORNE TRAFFIC
The IZ maze, from the air.

For Halloween, get lost in memories of Iz

His legend is larger than life, and now so is his image.

The likeness of musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole has been carved into a cornfield in Kapolei, creating a maze perfect for Halloween adventuring. Aloun Farms commissioned the maze on 5.2 acres of farmland on Farrington Highway between Waipahu and Kapolei.

It will be open tomorrow through Nov. 25. Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, 4 to 11 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $8, $5 for children, benefiting Future Farmers of America. Call 677-6412.
