Lee takes 5-stroke lead into
final round at Waikoloa

Regan Lee shot a one-under-par 71 yesterday to take a five-stroke lead at the close of the second round of the 28th annual Waikoloa Open on the Big Island.

Lee enters the final round of the tournament at the Waikoloa Village Course with a total score of 141. Lee opened the tournament by firing a two-under-par 70 amid windy conditions in the first round on Friday.

Casey Nakama shot his second-straight round of 73 yesterday to give him a two-day total of 146. Jerry Mullen and Kevin Carll both fired rounds of 72 yesterday and are tied for third place at 148.

Christensen and Naji help HPU to meet wins

Hawaii Pacific University runners swept top honors in the school's invitational cross country meet yesterday in Kaneohe.

Nina Christensen won the women's race with a time of 21 minutes, 39 seconds to lead the Sea Warriors to the team title in the meet held at HPU's windward campus. Teammate Lisa Blomme finished second, 11 seconds behind.

HPU posted 21 points. Chaminade finished second with 34 points. UH-Manoa and BYU-Hawaii also participated in the meet as non-scoring competitors.

HPU's Abdeslam Naji won the men's race with a time of 35 minutes, 12 seconds, beating teammate Siul Michel by 12 seconds.

HPU's Christian Madsen led for much of the race, but a wrong turn took him off the course and he was disqualified.

HPU still won the meet convincingly with 24 points to 34 for second-place Chaminade.



Hawaii's Own

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate did not pitch in Pittsburgh's 2-0 loss to St. Louis.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien alumnus struck out in the ninth inning as a pinch-hitter in Houston's 6-2 loss to Chicago.
