Some new assignments
and old friends

Hawaii broadcasters burst with new offerings next month, starting at 5 a.m. Oct. 1.

Airwaves will oscillate with the return of state Sen. Bob Hogue to the radio and a new assignment for KITV afternoon weather anchor Ben Gutierrez. Later, a KITV morning veteran returns and KHON launches a new public service initiative.

KITV alumna, former "Good Morning Hawaii" co-anchor Kathy Muneno has rejoined KITV as the weekday weather anchor for the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news shows.

KITV President and General Manager Mike Rosenberg next week will head for the mainland where he plans to interview finalists for the vacant news director position.

"I'm hopeful that by the end of next week we can offer somebody a job," he said.

KHON begins a sponsored, stationwide and month-long effort to increase breast-cancer awareness Oct. 1.

"We're already doing news stories featuring breast cancer," KHON Vice President and General Manager Bill Spellman said.

The station will debut an hour-long special, "Choose Life, Victory Over Breast Cancer," at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, and tentatively plans to rebroadcast it twice during prime time.

Spellman said Hawaiki Tower will be lit in pink, a symbolic representation of the issue.

Hogue will lead the KGU AM 760 morning show from 5 to 9 a.m. along with Producer John Noland, News Director Peg Stewart and board operator Chaz Ontai.

Hogue has met with the state Ethics Commission "so I would understand totally what I could and couldn't do" -- that the show won't conflict with his legislative schedule during the legislative session and that the station will address equal time provisions come election season.

Hogue continues his free-lance writing and work as an HPU basketball announcer along with Noland.

"The legislative duties come first," he said. "All the other things I'm doing are part-time projects that feed the family."
