Lake qualifies for collegiate
sailing championships

Hawaii coed sailing team freshman Bryan Lake finished second in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Men's Singlehanded Championships in Long Beach, Calif., last weekend.

With the second place finish, Lake qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Men's North Singlehanded American Championships in Toronto, Oct. 19-21.

Hawaii's Steve Brown finished fourth and teammate Will Edwards took fifth place, while John Sharkey finished 14th at the PCIYRA championships.

Lake is the first coed sailor to represent Hawaii at the nationals since John Myrdal and Morgan Larson in 1994.

The Wahine sailing team also competed in the PCIYRA meet, with Kili Chivers, Sam Howard, Renee DeCurtis and Melody Torres finishing in 10th, 11th, 12th and 15th.

The Wahine are ranked third and the coed team is ranked eighth by Sailing World magazine.

Sea Warriors streak to 40th straight win

No. 1 Hawaii Pacific (12-0, 6-0) defeated Western New Mexico (8-8, 2-2) 30-27, 31-29, 23-30, 30-18 in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match in Silver City, N.M. last night.

For the second straight night, HPU outside hitter Roberta Robert led both teams in kills and digs with 23 and 31.

HPU returns home tonight and takes on island rival Chaminade in a conference match on Friday.

If the Sea Warriors continue to win, they could tie, then break, the all-time Division II win streak of 46 games (Ferris State, 1984) against Brigham Young-Hawaii in Laie on Oct. 26 and 27.

Hawaii Pacific still No. 1 in AVCA Division II poll

The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team (11-0, 5-0 in Pacific West Conference) is the top-ranked team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll for the fourth straight week.

The defending national champion Lady Sea Warriors are the only undefeated team in the poll.

North Alabama (12-1), West Texas A&M (12-2), Western State (13-1) from Colorado and Truman (16-1) round out the top five.

Krause, Wahine ninth in golf season opener

The Hawaii women's golf team placed ninth out of 14 teams with a score of 620 at the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate in Colorado yesterday.

Sophomore Rene Krause paced the Wahine with a two-round total of 153, tied for 21st place, individually.

Megan McGuinness (155) tied for 30th, while Melanie Matsumura, Laura DeLucia and Bobbie Arakawa all shot 158 and tied for 44th.

Host Denver won the event with a 599, led by Kelly Schaub, who took the individual title with a 6-under-par 138. The closest individual competitor to Schaub was seven strokes back.

Hawaii's Own

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate threw a perfect eighth inning in a 13-1 blowout of the Cubs yesterday after being left in the bullpen for the past three games.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien product did not appear in Houston's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals yesterday, and has stayed in the dugout for three straight games for the first time since baseball was shut down following the terrorist attacks on the United States.
