Isles' gifts to Red Cross total about $721,000

Hawaii residents and businesses have contributed about $721,000 so far to American Red Cross relief efforts to assist families affected by the terrorist attack.

"Red Cross volunteers in Hawaii have been actively contacting families who have lost family members and providing them with the support and assistance they need at this time," said Roger Dickson, chief executive officer for the American Red Cross-Hawaii Chapter.

So far, 11 Hawaii residents have been sent to assist relief operations on the East Coast and supporting functions in Dallas and Falls Church, Va.

Following the attack, the American Red Cross launched a relief effort that includes a $100 million gift program to provide financial assistance to families of victims lost at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The gift program will help families with needs such as mortgage payments, utility bills, food and clothing.

Overturned garbage truck disrupts traffic

An overturned garbage truck caused a major traffic delay for commuters heading into town from Leeward Oahu this morning.

The truck overturned on the H-1 Freeway near the Kaamilo Street Overpass in Aiea about 3:46 a.m., blocking two eastbound lanes of the freeway and the shoulder lane which is usually open for morning traffic.

Cars were backed up past Makakilo for much of the morning. The state Department of Transportation opened the ZipLane to all motorists to help ease the congestion. Honolulu police opened all lanes of the freeway at 8:10 a.m.

Police capture suspect in Kaimuki bank robbery

CrimeStoppers tips led to the arrest of a bank robbery suspect yesterday in Makiki. Honolulu police said they made the arrest within 24 hours after the suspect robbed the Kaimuki Branch of Territorial Savings on Monday.

Police said tips helped officers locate the suspect yesterday afternoon. They said they tailed him in Makiki before making a traffic stop and arresting him near the corner of Punahou and Dole streets.

The 39-year-old male suspect faces possible federal bank robbery charges.f

Couple charged with assaults on 2 men

Honolulu police have charged a 40-year old male suspect and his wife for allegedly assaulting two other men who were said to have had affairs with the suspect's wife while he was in prison.

Police said the wife picked up the first victim in Makiki and drove him around the corner, where her husband was waiting at a dead end. Police said the husband then started beating the victim. When the victim tried to get away, police said the suspect's wife threatened him with a knife. About half an hour later, police said the couple was involved in another assault case several blocks away.

Police charged Guy Raposa with second-degree assault and Sandy Raposa with first-degree terroristic threatening.

Woman struck by car at BYUH campus

A 47-year-old woman was transported to Queen's Medical Center by medevac helicopter in critical condition yesterday after she was struck by a car while walking on the Brigham Young University-Hawaii campus in Laie.

Police said the accident happened at 6:48 a.m. The driver of the car, a 25-year-old woman, is a student at the school. Traffic investigators said inattention on the part of the driver appears to be a contributing factor in the accident.

Second suspect arrested in Aug. 31 park stabbing

HILO >> Police have arrested a second suspect for attempted murder in the Aug. 31 stabbing in the back of a 19-year-old man at Wailoa State Park, they said.

The first suspect, a 39-year-old Puna man, was arrested following the . Several fights were going on at the park when the stabbing took place, police said.

Brothers face charges of marijuana promotion

WAILUKU >> Two Molokai men were scheduled to face a preliminary hearing Oct. 23 in Molokai District Court, after police seized 415 marijuana seedlings Saturday at a residence in Hoolehua.

Hanalei Yasso, 20, and brother Kumukoa Yasso, 19, were charged with first-degree commercial promotion of marijuana and prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia.

Brush fire closes part of Kohala Mountain Road

NORTH KOHALA >> A brush fire has forced police to close off a portion of the Kohala Mountain Road (Route 250). Police said the road was closed about 10:45 a.m. yesterday at about the 7-mile marker and will be closed until further notice.
