America attacked

Americans will unite against terror

Sept. 11, 2001: Some are calling it "the day that changed the world."

The raid on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 was the greatest tragedy the United States of America had faced until Tuesday's terrorist attacks. Much like the bombing of Pearl Harbor, those responsible had a message to send and thought they were sly enough to get away with such a violent act.

But what they were not prepared for was the consequences that followed. The bombing of Pearl Harbor united a nation that was previously divided by what would turn out to be, in retrospect, petty differences. These current events have once again awakened this sleeping giant that we call America. I hope whoever is responsible for these attacks is prepared for the consequences that will now follow and realizes that this time, this giant is not alone.

[Quotables]

"It's not just simply a matter of capturing people and holding them accountable, but removing the sanctuaries, removing the support systems, ending states who sponsor terrorism."

Paul D. Wolfowitz

Deputy secretary of defense, on the task of waging a war against terrorists.

"The worst thing we can do at this point is ignore the issue and not do anything about it."

Sylvia Luke

Hawaii House vice speaker, on a state Supreme Court decision invalidating a state law that provided for payment of a portion of Honolulu Airport revenues to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

Fly American flag to show nation's unity

In the land of the free and the home of the brave: How many American flags can we fly?

Can we here in Hawaii have at least one-half of the population with flags flying high outside of our homes? Flying the American flag outside our homes for the next seven days would send a powerful message to the world about our courage, our determination and our unity in America.

Flying the flag would also be a sign of honor and support to those who have lost loved ones in the tragic events of Sept. 11.

Flying our American flags would make a statement to the world and to our leaders in Washington. Have the courage to get out there, fly the flag, get to know your neighbor and be willing to stand for what is right.

News groups have responsibilities

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks this week on the mainland, I am concerned about the psychological damage these events may inflict.

The manner in which media organizations report this situation will make an imprint in the minds of millions watching the coverage on television or reading about it in newspapers.

As a concerned parent and citizen, I implore media groups to be responsible and to not overdramatize, glamorize or overplay the gruesomeness of the events.

This has been an overwhelming calamity and the public wants to know the latest news. However, it is not necessary to continue repeatedly to show the ugliness of this evil -- people jumping from windows, bodies, blood and gore. The media play a big role in perpetuating the post-traumatic shock and stress of the tragedy, and in a way, do more damage than the initial terrorist attack by continuing to display horrific images.

The media have great powers, but will they use this power to inform or harm the public? Please use discretion in news coverage of tragedies such as this.
