Conference to encourage
volunteer service work

Several workshops will be
held from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2

International experts on volunteerism will gather in Hawaii Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 for the 2001 Hawaii Governor's Conference on Volunteerism.

The conference, "Sharing Aloha in the Global Village," will begin at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii with a "Productive Aging" forum from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On Sept. 29 it will move to the Kamehameha Schools campus from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to focus on engaging youth and schools in service and creating a positive learning environment while helping to build caring communities.

Also on Sept. 29 and continuing into the next day will be a free "R U Ready" Disaster Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center.

On Sept. 30 there will be a gala welcome celebration and dinner, called "The Rhythms of Aloha," from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center.

On Oct. 1 and 2 the conference will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center, featuring workshops and seminars on volunteerism in disasters and aging programs, service learning through volunteering and character education for youth and management skills.

Registration for the full five-day conference is $175. Registration for individual events is available.
