Wahine watch late lead
lapse against winless Eagles

The overtime bubble burst for the Hawaii women's soccer team yesterday in Cheney, Wash. With fewer than four minutes to play in regulation, the Wahine watched a 1-0 lead evaporate after Eastern Washington's Deszeray Dougherty dribbled a penalty kick into the left corner to tie the score.

Then, at the 9:34 mark of the second overtime period, Liz Hail scored on a tap-in to give the Eagles their first victory of the season after three losses. It was the only shot taken by either team in that period.

The play started after defender Tracy Jellison passed up the right side to Colleen Ferriter who crossed to Hail.

The score was 0-0 at halftime despite the 10-3 shot advantage enjoyed by Hawaii (3-1).

Natalie Groenwoud gave the Wahine the lead at 48:32 with a hard shot from the middle of the box. The freshman midfielder from British Columbia was set up by Joelle Sugai, a freshman midfielder from Aiea.

The Wahine return home today. Hawaii opens play in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Festival Thursday against UC Riverside at 7 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Note: Hawaii's Arlene Devitt was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week yesterday. The sophomore striker had an assist in the road win at Idaho and scored the lone goal in the road victory at Gonzaga.

Hawaii Polo Inn wins USPA Players Cup

The Hawaii Polo Inn took first place in the USPA Players Cup tournament played Sunday at Waimanalo. La Martina-Subaru placed second and Beachcomber Reality placed third.

Sam Delgado was named the most valuable player. The top pony was Coyote, owned by Allen Hoe.

Star UH volleyball recruit will not play this year

Jennifer Saleaumua will not play for the Hawaii volleyball team this season.

Wahine coach Dave Shoji confirmed yesterday that Saleaumua is not coming to Hawaii. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin originally reported this story in late July.

"I don't think so," Shoji said. "I had really no expectations of what would happen with the team. I was hoping to get her on campus and let her start classes."

The deadline for enrollment was Monday and Saleaumua is still at home in San Diego. Saleaumua had not qualified academically when the Wahine started training in early August.

Saleaumua was the only Wahine recruit for this season.

The 5-foot-11 outside hitter led the Bonita Vista High Barons to the 2000 California Interscholastic Federation girls state championship and Vball.com's national No.1 ranking.

Named Volleyball Magazine's Player of the Year, Saleaumua set the national single-match kill record with 57 in the state championship win over St. Mary's of Stockton.

BYU-Hawaii upended by ranked water polo team

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team dropped its record to 2-4 yesterday after losing to nationally ranked California Baptist 11-5.

BYU-Hawaii gained several opportunities to score by drawing 10 ejections on the Lancers, but only scored two with the man advantage.

The Seasiders were led by freshman Vanja Kalabic's three goals. The Seasiders face Claremont today.

Hawaii's Own

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate and his Pirates had the day off yesterday, before tangling with the Mets in Pittsburgh today. Fetters has seen third baseman Robin Ventura more than any other Met in his career, holding him to two hits and five walks in 21 plate appearances.

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus is out for the season with a wrist injury, but his off-season commitments are piling up. Agbayani plans to play golf in a charity event with former sumo wrestler Konishiki and chefs Sam Choy and Alan Wong on Nov. 4 at the Ko Olina Resort.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien alumnus had the day off yesterday, but will get a front-row seat for the Barry Bonds show today when the Giants visit Houston. Should Truby play in the game, it will probably not be against starting pitcher Russ Ortiz, who has whiffed him in each of the three times he has met him on the major league stage.
