HPD Career Center
will make recruiting easier

The Honolulu Police Department is almost up to full strength if you count all the recruits in training as uniformed police officers, said Chief Lee Donohue.

And he believes the new HPD Career Center will help the department maintain its strength by making it easier for people, especially those from out of state, to apply for jobs.

When fully staffed, the center will enable prospective uniformed and civilian employees to apply, take a written examination, get the results and

begin orientation and pre-employment interviews all in the same day, year around. The center had its grand opening last week.

Under current practice, written examinations are administered about once every four months at public school cafeterias, and results are mailed weeks later. Interviews are conducted at HPD Headquarters in whatever space is available, with applicants lining the halls waiting for their turn.

The career center has dedicated space for written tests, interviews, psychological evaluations, and polygraph and computerized voice stress analyzer examinations. The staff includes clerks and detectives who perform background checks.

The center shares the fifth floor at 715 S. King St. with the city Department of Human Resources.
