There are 1.2 million people in Hawaii, and each has a story.

With "Keiki to Kupuna: The People of Paradise," the Honolulu Star-Bulletin profiles some of the diverse people that make Hawaii such a vibrant place.

The 128-page magazine, inserted as a special section in today's newspaper, uses the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau as a jumping-off point to delve into the lives of island residents, explaining who we are, what we do and how we got here. Statistics on race, ethnicity, age, neighborhoods and businesses come to life in context with the people behind the numbers.

The magazine includes contributions from nearly all the Star-Bulletin's reporting and photography staff, as well as submissions by readers eager to share their family histories.

Whether they be stories recounting the harrowing arrival of a recent immigrant, describing the difficulty of preserving a family business or recalling a simpler lifestyle of generations past, we hope that in these pages you'll recognize a little bit of yourself and your family.
