It seems we can't get enough of upscale food events -- they just keep filling up the culinary calendar. Over the next few weeks, take your choice of these dinner affairs:

Roy and Friends

This annual fund-raiser for the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation underscores the symbiotic relationship between chefs and farmers that is key to the Hawaii Regional Cuisine movement.

Chef Roy Yamaguchi is in his fifth year of hosting the event at his flagship Hawaii Kai restaurant.

Joining Yamaguchi in serving up local agriculture and aquaculture products will be chefs Alan Wong, Philippe Padovani, Wayne Hirabayashi, Hiroshi Fukui, D.K. Kodama and Colin Nishida. From the Roy's family of restaurants will be corporate chef Jacqueline Lau, Ronnie Nasuti and Barbi Meinel. Adding a casual touch and traditional Hawaiian food to the affair will be John and Debbie Leong of Leong's Cafe.

The event takes place 6 p.m. Sept. 10. Tickets are $100, of which $5 is tax-deductible. Call 478-9621.

STAR-BULLETIN / 2001
Hiro Sone received a James Beard nomination this year as best
chef in California. He will cook at the Lupus Foundation
benefit Sept. 17.

Honolulu Wine Festival

The annual event benefiting the Lupus Foundation is a two-part affair:

Italy Mio Amore: 100 Italian wines, plus samplings of olive oils and cheeses of Italy will be showcased, 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sheraton-Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom. Sheraton chef Daniel Delbrel will prepare Italian specialties. Cost is $55 in advance, $65 at the door for the grand tasting of wines. Seminars will showcase the wines of Angelo Gaja ($150), Ricardo Cotarella ($75) and a 1997 Barolo tasting ($95). Call 739-9463.

Galaxy of Stars: Hiro Sone of Napa Valley's Terra restaurant headlines a gala dinner, 6-9 p.m. Sept. 17, Sheraton-Waikiki lawn. Sone has won several awards for his eclectic cuisine, combining Japanese traditions with cuisines of France and Italy. Joining him at the dinner will be chefs Hiroshi Fukui, Darryl Fujita, Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, preparing two dishes each. Desserts will be by Mark Okumura of Alan Wong's. Cost is $175 or $1,750 for a table of 10. Call 328-1522.

Visiting Artists Program

Guillermo Tellez, chef de cuisine for Charlie Trotter's in Chicago, presents two dinners at the Manele Bay Hotel on Lanai, Sept. 15 and 16.

Tellez, formerly of Maya in Miami, is known for his contemporary take on traditional Mexican dishes, a cuisine largely overlooked in today's fusion movement.

He will present prix fixe dinners on both nights and a free cooking demonstration at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in the hotel lobby. Cost is $75, $120 with wines.

The resort's Visiting Artists Program brings chefs, artists and other professionals to Lanai throughout the year.

Call (800) 321-4666.
