UH’s lack of DB depth
obvious as Jackson works
at cornerback

The lack of depth at defensive back and the lack of progress toward full health by Hawaii starters Jacob Espiau and Hyrum Peters was seen Friday when All-WAC candidate free safety Nate Jackson also got some work at cornerback, including lining up against offensive standout Ashley Lelie.

"We have Nate working at corner, and Nate's the only guy who I know that probably could play corner, nickel and safety, as well as wide receiver and be as good as any of our wide receivers," UH defensive backs coach Rich Miano explained. "So we're so thin now at corner, we want to be sure that Nate understands that (position).

"We'd like to find other guys who can do the job, and that's why we're working certain people."

Currently, Josiah Cravalho, a redshirt freshman walk-on from Kaahumanu Hou Christian School on Maui, is manning a corner spot with the No. 1 defense with injuries to Hyrum Peters and Gary Wright. Yesterday, Cravalho made a highlight film interception on a deep ball intended for Tafiti Uso.

"Josiah's getting better every day," Miano said. "He just keeps working."

But if pressed, the Warriors are likely to reshuffle the lineup to take advantage of Jackson's versatility.

"If we have to go, in an emergency, we'll move Robert Grant to safety and we'll move Nate Jackson to corner," Miano said.

The Warriors would prefer to shore up the corner position if they can, in order to leave Jackson at safety, where he fits best.

"He's so valuable as a free safety and a nickel back in our nickel package as a blitzer and everything else he does," Miano said.

Kelvin's Korner:

Sophomore Kelvin Millhouse has solidified his hold of a starting spot at one corner.

He is among the biggest cornerbacks to ever play for Hawaii at 6-foot-1, 198 pounds. But his size doesn't take away from his other skills, coach June Jones said.

"He's very intelligent, he has great athletic ability and he's run a 4.4 (in the 40)," Jones said. "He's a former receiver, so he understands what they're trying to do to him out there."

Redskins redux:

Former UH special teams coach John Wilbur has been asked to do some narration for NFL Films, specifically a special on the Washington Redskins teams of the early 1970s.

Wilbur played for the Redskins from 1971 to 1975 after playing for the Cowboys from 1966 to 1969 and the Rams in 1970.

"Watch out, I'm making my move on Art Donovan," Wilbur said.
