Hilo wins pair in
volleyball tourney

Hawaii-Hilo leads the eighth annual Hawaiian Style Classic women's volleyball tournament with a 2-0 record after first-day action at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans opened the three-day tournament by knocking off Friends University 30-19, 30-14, 30-15.

Sara Pilgreens led the Hilo attack with 15 kills. The Vulcans combined for a .465 hitting percentage.

Hilo also beat St. Martin's (Wash.) College 30-27, 22-30, 30-28, 18-30, 15-12. Pilgreen led the team with 20 kills and 13 digs. Tiffanie Ollison added 16 kills and 13 digs while Salvador managed 15 kills.

In other tournament action, Brigham Young-Hawaii handed Mercyhurst its first loss of the season with a 30-22, 30-25, 30-28 victory. Ashley Moeai led the Seasiders (1-0) with 15 kills and a .591 kill percentage. She committed two errors on 22 attempts. Karla Ribero had 11 kills and 14 digs.

In Hawaii Pacific's match with Friends, Andrea Wean's' .667 kill percentage lead the Sea Warriors to a 30-17, 30-16, 30-21 victory. Wean had 16 kills on 24 attempts without an error and also added five block assists. Roberta Robert added 13 kills and 12 digs.

Yacht clubs host 2-day fishing tournament

The 15th annual Hawaii Yacht Club and Waikiki Yacht Club's Hoolea fishing tournament got under way today with 70 people competing in categories ranging from small fishing equipped trailer boats to large fishing charters.

Awards will be given out for marlin, ahi mahimahi and ono in the annual two-day jackpot tournament. Fishing begins at 7 a.m. through 4 p.m. with weigh-ins held at the Waikiki Yacht Club. The public is invited to attend.

Polo tournaments set for Waimanalo

There will be several polo tournaments held this month in Waimanalo, starting with the Players Cup on Sept. 9. The Aloha Cup is set for Sept. 16, the Centennial Cup on Sept. 23 and the Governors Cup on Sept. 30.

General admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 getting in free. For more information, call 396-0494.

Wailea Canoe Club wins Great Kahakuloa

The Wailea Canoe Club won the annual Great Kahakuloa Challenge Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Race last weekend with a time of 3:06:38.

The race began at Kahului Harbor in Maui and ended at Dig Me beach in Kaanapali. The Hawaiian Canoe Club placed second with the Kahana Canoe Club securing third. There were 15 crews in the 32-mile race.

UH begins 30th anniversary celebration

Hawaii begins its 30th anniversary celebration of women's sports today at 3 p.m. in Klum Gym. The three-hour event features live music, performances by the Rainbow dancers and cheerleaders and speeches from the different women's coaches.

The 30th anniversary launched a $10 million endowment campaign that will fund 105 scholarships over the next decade. To donate to any of these scholarships, please contact the UH Foundation. Tickets for today's event is $10. For more information, contact 956-4999.

Hawaii's Own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alum went 1-for-4 in a 6-1 victory for New York over Florida.

He hit his 14th double of the season in the seventh, setting up Todd Zeile to eventually score.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani alum did not pitch in Pittsburgh's 11-3 loss to Cincinnati.

Chris Truby, Astros: The Damien alum did not play in Houston's 3-2 win over Milwaukee.
