Officials of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply urged residents and businesses from Red Hill to Hawaii Kai to conserve water yesterday until repairs were completed on a 36-inch water main leak.

Work crews hoped to complete repairs by last night, said Denise DeCosta, spokeswoman for the Board of Water Supply.

A leak was detected on Moanalua Road between Kaahumanu and Kaahele streets in Waimalu Monday night.

Moanalua Road yeterday afternoon.

DeCosta said it is unknown how the leak occurred.

The main transports 12 million gallons of water daily from the Punanani Wells to distribution lines and reservoirs serving the metropolitan Honolulu area.

The Punanani Wells supply about 15 percent of Honolulu's daily water demand.

Clifford Jamile, manager and chief engineer of the BWS, said the main would take hours to repair and at least another 12 hours to refill and charge up the distribution system.
