Sapolu named 49ers
alumni coordinator

HAVE you heard? Jesse Sapolu is returning to the San Francisco 49ers. No, it's not that the offensive line, where Jesse played for many years, is in such sad shape that he's been called to put on the pads once again. It's just that Jesse has been named alumni coordinator for the 49ers. He got off to a good start on his latest Hawaii trip, dining with another 49er alum, R. C. Owen. Sapolu might also serve as Farrington alumni coordinator, since he got together with Governess Emme Tomimbang while here and together they compared notes on the "Sounds of Hawaii" concert they co-host at Great America in San Francisco Sept. 8 on KPIX-TV. Hostess of that station's magazine program is the gorgeous Malou Nubla who models some of the new Tomimbang clothing line on the grounds of the Kahala Mandarin. Featured bands that night are Na Leo Pilimehana, Ten Feet, Kalapana and Colón ...

WHEN Jesse met with Emme here, he invited her to be his guest at a 49er game that weekend. Emme protested that they had to emcee the show that Saturday night. Jesse looked at her as he might look at a child. "Emme," he said, "this is the NFL, not UH. They play their games on Sunday." So Emme will be there on Sept. 9 ...

DEAD or alive -- they have 'em all at Hawaii Public Radio. The station's Michael Titterton was a guest on the Perry & Price show on KSSK where he was promoting the first annual KIPO "Blues Night" marathon at Anna Bannanas last Saturday. The hosts asked Titterton about the difference between the HPR stations in Hawaii. "It's simple," said Brit Titterton, "we've got the dead Europeans on 88.1 and the live Americans on 89.3." ...

Sty in your eye

ROYAL Hawaiian Band conductor Aaron Mahi and wife Cathy Foy, former Miss Hawaii, dined at Swiss Haus the other night and Aaron recalled how he used to play his bass at the restaurant nearly 30 years ago when it known as The Sty. Mahi said he had to rush from the concert hall to get there and play at 9 p.m. and admits that on occasion during those exhausting nights, he'd drift off to sleep, resting on his bass ... Incidentally, the Swiss Haus will close for a week starting Sept. 10 so chef-owner Freddie Halmes can do the gut-busting "Run to the Sun" on Maui Sept. 15. That's a grueling 36-mile ultra marathon that starts at sea level and finishes at the 10,023- foot summit of Haleakala, legendary "Home of the Sun." ...

Fit to be tied

THOSE aloha print ties you see on KHON-TV's Joe Moore and sports guy Ron Mizutani are the creation of Ron's wife, Michelle Mizutani. She's also the founder of the award-winning Team Hawaii equestrian group, and while Joe & Ron won't have to worry about horses wearing their signature ties, Michelle is making some available for the Hawaii Horse Show Association's benefit at New Town & Country Stables in Waimanalo Saturday and Sunday. She's also donating some of the aloha print BVDs she makes, but don't look for them on the Channel 2 news. I hope! Admission to the horse show is free, but money from the General Store sales and competitors' entry fees goes to the Hawaiian Humane Society ...
