all the answers

HERE we go. Football season officially started with the University of Hawaii's first day of practice yesterday, so it's time to kick off college football with a quick Sidelines Quiz!

1. There has been a lot of discussion on this, so once and for all the proper, official and indisputable way to refer to the UH quarterback is:

a) "Timmy."

b) "Tim."

c) "Braddah TC."

d) "Fabio."

2. Pick your favorite two-a-days cliché:

a) "We're getting tired of hitting our own guys."

b) "It gets tough sometimes but we've just got to push through it."

c) "The freshmen are finding out what college football is all about."

d) "%&*#@$! Cramp! Cramp! Cramp!"

3. The biggest concern for UH during these preseason practices is:

a) Finding a running back.

b) Depth on defense.

c) The continued development of (insert best answer from question No. 1 above) Chang.

d) Not losing to a Division I-AA team in the first game of the season.

4. The best college football player in the country is:

a) Roy Williams, safety, Oklahoma.

b) Toniu Fonoti, guard, Nebraska.

c) Alex Brown, defensive end, Florida.

d) This is why I don't have a Heisman vote, isn't it?

WE HAVE BEEN getting lots of response in the Rainbows/Warriors debate, and agree or disagree, these are great letters. So here's a reward. The best letter (keep them coming) will receive a T-shirt of the new UH helmet with the old rainbow logo faded into a mist behind it, saying, "The Spirit Behind it All!"

That says it all. A new design has taken the forefront, but the rainbow will always be there.

No matter what your point of view, you will be sure to love this shirt, generously donated by one of my favorite Rainbows, the old Corrections Officer himself, Dana Directo. Mahalo to the man who is a living reminder that Rainbows can be tough (and that guys named Dana can be tough).

AND IN OTHER response to Sidelines columns (sorry, no more shirts), we find out that:

>> Former Rainbows coach Fred vonAppen WAS a very charming guy, just as charming as June Jones.

>> Professional bowlers rolling strikes on TV in bikinis is NOT a good idea.

>> Jamie Sharper IS a great player and NOT a nobody, and here are his career highlights to prove it.

>> The UH higher ups DO have a secret conspiracy to bring back the rainbow, so they can make all kinds of money, as we whiners will be happy to buy a lot of new rainbow merchandise. (Good idea!)

>> Jones should NOT dare to show up late outside of the forgiving Quarterback Club.

>> My writing DOES sound "really like he's talking to one of his beer drinking fat brah's." (No, this is NOT intended as a compliment.)
