Golf team moves into second at amateur tourney

Team Hawaii moved into second place after yesterday's second round of the 35th Pacific Coast Amateur Golf Championship in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Hawaii, represented by Tony Okano Sr., Jim Seki Jr. and Parker McLachlin, shot a 286 (using the two top scores of the three-man team). Oregon led with a 284.

Individually, Okano was in a three-way tie for third at 70--142, four strokes behind Travis Johnson of Southern California.

Seki shot a 71--144 and McLachlin carded a 73--151. McLachlin was playing with borrowed clubs after his were lost by the airline.

Play was stopped for 63 minutes during the early afternoon due to a large monsoon.

Heavy rains and lightning forced players and spectators off the course.

Sasada to defend title at stroke play golf

Some 50 of the state's top golf club professionals, including defending champion Brian Sasada of Makena, will compete in the AT&T Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Resort, Aug. 6-8.

The event begins with a pro-am on Sunday. The 54-hole tournament includes championship and senior flights.

Among those also entered are Tommy Hines, Ron Castillo Jr. and Beau Yokomoto. Back to defend his seniors title is Rodney Acia.

The senior flight is also the Aloha Section PGA's Senior Club Professional Championship qualifier. The first two rounds of stroke play will be used as qualifying score for the National Senior Club Professional Championship in October in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The championship flight golfers are vying for a purse of $15,000. The senior purse is $5,000 and the pro-am purse is $1,200.

Kailua's Dwyer ousted at U.S. amateur golf

Kailua's Bridget Dwyer, Hawaii's lone competitor remaining in the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship, was eliminated in yesterday's first round of match play.

Dwyer fell to Stacy Prammanasudh of Tulsa, Okla., 4 and 3, at the Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan.

Junior golfers vying for Ryder Cup spots

Three Hawaii golfers are in contention for spots on the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup golf teams that will compete in the competition between the U.S. and Europe in Ireland.

Currently, Shaun Felechner of Lahaina is tied for fourth in the boys' 13-15 division. In the girls' 13-15 division, Wailuku's Kelly Nakashima is rated sixth and Lindsay Hong of Honolulu is tied for seventh.

The top four players in each of the divisions will qualify to represent the U.S. team. The PGA Junior Series, which determines the standings, concludes Aug. 7-9, at the Eagle Crewst Resort in Redmond, Ore.

Bragado, partner advance at world volleyball event

Honolulu's Danalee Bragado and partner Ali Wood went 1-1 in pool play yesterday to advance to today's second round of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Klagenfurt, Austria.

In the men's competition, fifth-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong of Hawaii began play today. Also receiving a bye yesterday was former University of Hawaii player Nik Berger, who is seeded first in the event with partner Oliver Stamm; both are from Austria.

Hawaii tennis players to USTA super nationals

Four tennis players from Hawaii will be competing in the USTA Boys 18 &16 Super National Championships that begin Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

In the 18-year-old division are Christopher Lam of Honolulu and Kaneohe's Michael Wojnarowicz. Competing in the 16s are Honolulu's Robert Lim and Jamie Migia.

Aiea junior baseball team into divisional final

Blaze Moleta tossed a four-hitter and Aiea eliminated Idaho, 12-1, in yesterday's semifinal of the Little League Junior League Divisional Tournament in Salem, Ore.

Moleta struck out six in helping Aiea advance to today's championship game against Montana.

Lance Powell homered for the Hawaii team, which improved to 3-1.

Evans bike road race scheduled for Sunday

The Dick Evans Memorial Bicycle Road Race, a 112-mile perimeter ride around Oahu, is scheduled for Sunday.

The race starts at 5:45 a.m. at the Oahu Club on Hawaii Kai Drive. Entry fee is $55 until Saturday, $65 on race day.

Yogi weightlifting meet set for Saturday on Maui

The 4th Doc Yogi Maui Invitational Weightlifting Meet is scheduled for Saturday at the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului.

A team from Maui will take on an Oahu team in Olympic-style weightlifting beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Hawaii's Own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 2-for-4 with an RBI in New York's 10-inning, 8-2 win over Houston.

Agbayani hit a two-out double in the second inning but was stranded at third base after advancing on a wild pitch. He came up in the fourth with two out and men on first and second. He singled to center, scoring Mike Piazza. Todd Zeile then scored on a throwing error on the same play, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. Agbayani left the game as part of a double switch after striking out in the ninth.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani product did not pitch in Pittsburgh's 3-1 loss to San Francisco.

Brandon Villafuerte, Rangers: The Hilo native did not pitch in Texas' 9-7 loss to the New York Yankees.
