Kaio grabs sole lead

NAGOYA, July 20 (Kyodo) -- Yokozuna Musashimaru fell to another giant-killer for his second defeat while ozeki Kaio posted his 12th win to take the sole lead at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday.

Musashimaru's slip-up came minutes after Kaio continued to boss around his fellow ozeki, this time making an example of Chiyotaikai in an entertaining match between giants at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium.

In the day's final bout, Musashimaru (11-2) had Tochiazuma (9-4) wrapped up off the charge but lost his grip when the sekiwake quickly spun behind him and shoved the grand champion out of the raised ring to the roar of the cheering crowd.

Kaio (12-1) continued to play with fire when he retreated off the charge and was nearly shoved out by a rampaging Chiyotaikai (10-3).

The Tomozuna stable ozeki then thwarted Chiyotaikai's flailing-arm attack and used a deft arm-twist maneuver as he teetered on the edge of the ring to toss the Kokonoe ozeki out.

Kaio will claim his third Emperor's Cup with a win over Musashimaru in Saturday's final bout. Musashimaru, seeking his ninth title, has a 25-16 lifetime record against Kaio.

In Friday's other bouts, ozeki Musoyama used his superior strength to lift komusubi Wakanosato out in a matter of seconds for his second loss in as many days, leaving both wrestlers at 9-4.

Struggling ozeki Miyabiyama (6-7) appeared to have victory within his grasp against No. 5 maegashira Takanowaka(9-4), but lost his balance and went sailing out of the ring first.

In the lower echelons, Komusubi Asashoryu's fiery nature got the best of him when he leapt off the charge but was immediately flung onto the dirt by the more experienced No. 2 maegashira Kotonowaka (6-7) for his seventh loss.

Fellow Mongolian and No. 5 maegashira Kyokushuzan (6-7) was slammed down by top-ranked maegashira Takanonami (4-9). Compatriot Kyokutenho (7-6), an 11th-ranked maegashira, was unable to scrape out the minimum number of victories for a winning record with a loss to No. 13 maegashira Tokitsuumi (9-4).
