Ito, Shimozaki qualify
for U.S. Amateur golf

Merynn Ito of Aiea and Joan Shimozaki of Kihei, Maui, will represent Hawaii in the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship after qualifying at a USWGA sectional yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Ito shot a 2-over-par 75 for medalist honors, while Shimozaki had 78.

Ito said she was impressed with the field, but surprised by the scores.

"I thought par was going to qualify," Ito said. "I was worried about all those bogies I was getting on the back nine. We all could have played a lot better."

Ito said the summer national tournament will get her sharp for her upcoming college career at the University of Nebraska.

The 101st U.S. Women's Amateur is July 30-Aug. 4 in Andover, Kan.

Asahi Super Cup sets sail Friday

Approximately 20 yachts, crewed by sailors from Japan and Hawaii, are expected to compete in the fifth Asahi Super Cup, a five-race sailing competition Friday through Sunday, off Waikiki.

Honolulu sailor and owner of the J-44 "Kaimiloa," David Nottage, is the two-time defending PH-1 (Performance Handicap 1 -- the larger yachts) champion.

The defending PH-2 division champion is Team Constellation -- a team of Japanese and Hawaii dentists -- aboard "Ho'onanea." The crew was undefeated in its division last year.

Two short-course races are scheduled for both Friday and Sunday, the first starting at noon, the second starting five minutes after the finish of the first. The long-distance race is Saturday, also starting at noon.

Morinaga shares lead in junior world golf

Kayla Morinaga of Waipahu shot a 1-under 71 yesterday to share the first-round lead in the Girls 13-14 Division of the Junior World Championships golf tournament in San Diego.

Morinaga was tied with California's Jennifer Osborn going into today's second round of the four-day event.

In the Girls 11-12 division, Stephanie Kono was four strokes off the lead, tied for fourth with a 60.

Fifty-one boys and girls from Hawaii are competing in the event in eight divisions from 8-under through 13-15.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 0-for-3 in New York's 1-0 win over Toronto.

Agbayani grounded into a double play in the first, but he was able to move Joe McEwing to third. McEwing eventually scored the game's only run when Mike Piazza drove him in with a single to right-center.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate did not pitch in Los Angeles' 4-1 win over Pittsburgh.
