UH to honor Fernandez

A University of Hawaii resolution honoring the late Kane Fernandez was to be presented to his widow Linda today.

UH President Evan Dobelle and Warren Haruki, chairperson of the UH Foundation board of trustees, were to recognize Fernandez for his dedication to the prosperity of education at the university and throughout the state.

Fernandez, best known as the king of the E.K. Fernandez midway, was a 1958 UH graduate in business administration. He went on to work as a vice president at his family's E.K. Fernandez Shows, taking over the business following his father's death in 1970. He later became president and chief executive officer of Fernandez Entertainment.

Fernandez was a former chairman and board member of the UH Foundation. His last year on the board marked the beginning of a four-year fund-raising campaign that brought $116 million to the university.

Coast Guard believes missing ship found

ANCHORAGE >> Coast Guard investigators today discovered what they believe is a wreckage of a fishing boat that sank in the Bering Sea last April with 15 people aboard, including part-time Hilo resident David E. Rundall, 34, the skipper.

Using a sonar device towed behind a fishing trawler, the vessel was located more than 450 feet below the surface and about 200 miles northwest of St. Paul Island, the Coast Guard said.

Investigators planned to view the sunken vessel with a camera mounted on an unmanned submarine after a short memorial ceremony today.

"This is going to help us tremendously," said Capt. Ronald Morris of the Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation. "It floors me this is coming together the way it is."

The 92-foot Arctic Rose sank about 775 miles southwest of Anchorage on April 2. The only sign of trouble was a signal from the vessel's automatic emergency locator beacon.

Only the body of Rundall has been recovered.

Murdered pilot's wife claims self-defense

BEND, Ore. >> Opening arguments began yesterday in a trial of a Bend woman accused of killing her husband during a camping trip last fall.

Christopher James Northon, 44, a Hawaiian Airlines pilot, was found dead in his sleeping bag with a gunshot wound to the head at a campsite where the couple had been staying, police said.

His wife, Liysa Ann King-Northon, 39, has pleaded not guilty and said she acted in self-defense, Wallowa County Circuit Judge Phillip Mendiguren told potential jurors Monday.

King-Northon was arrested the day of the killing in Umatilla County after turning herself in. She had a black eye and other bruises when she was arrested, police said.

In 1997, Honolulu police went to the couple's home in Lanikai after a report of a domestic disturbance. The Northons split their time between their homes in Oregon and Hawaii, family friends said.

The couple had a 3-year-old and were raising an 8-year-old child from Liysa Northon's previous marriage. The children are in the care of King-Northon's first husband, who lives in Lanakai.

2 counterfeit $20 bills passed at Kunia store

Police recovered two counterfeit $20 bills yesterday when a 31-year-old Maili man tried to use them at the Royal Kunia Wal-Mart. Police said the man handed a store cashier the fake money at 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The cashier discovered the bills were counterfeit and called police. The bills do not resemble the counterfeit $50 and $20 bills that were circulating on the Big Island, said Al Joaquin, U.S. Secret Service Special Agent-In-Charge. Joaquin said no charges are being sought against the man because it appears he did not know the bills were counterfeit.
