No day at the beach

Four canoe clubs stayed out of
the Beach Boys Invitational Regatta

Because of the uncertainty over whether there would be a regatta or not, four Hui Wa'a outrigger canoe clubs decided to forgo yesterday's at Waikiki Beach.

Not competing were Kaneohe, which had traded overall wins with Lokahi all season; Manu O Ke Kai, Kai Poha and Koa Kai.

An association official said there was a delay in getting the permit to hold the regatta. The clubs decided not compete after last Sunday's regatta; approval for the permit came Tuesday.

Lokahi cruised to a 46-point win in the AA Division, finishing with 92 points. In the A Division, Kalihi Kai finished with 40 points.

Since yesterday's regatta was an invitational, points did not count toward qualifying for the state championship.

The Hui Wa'a championship is Saturday at Keehi Lagoon.

Outrigger rules: Outrigger Canoe Club won 10 events in claiming its first Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association regatta of the season yesterday at Keehi Lagoon.

Outrigger scored 97 points in the AA Division. Hui Nalu was second with 72 and Kailua third with 64. Lanikai, which had been dominating this season, finished a surprising fourth.

Keahiakahoe won the A Division with 18 points, edging out Waikiki Surf Club (16).

OHCRA's championship is Sunday at Keehi Lagoon.
