Dog surprised feral cats, says Humane Society

The Hawaiian Humane Society has determined that the attack by a pack of feral cats on a woman and her dog was an aberration, and the fate of the cats will be left up to nearby residents.

The attack occurred Wednesday night on a sidewalk outside Kirin Restaurant on South Beretania Street. The restaurant is not having any problems with the cats that cluster along the side street where the attack occurred, said Linda Haller, Humane Society director of shelter operations.

The attack occurred as Moiliili resident Deena Frooman and her dog, Kekoa, were walking to the market. Frooman was treated at the scene for a gash and punctures in her thigh. Her dog suffered a punctured nose and scratches.

After talking with Frooman and witnesses, Haller said, "We basically feel it's just an unusual situation." The cats were feeding in an enclosed area, and when they got surprised by the dog, "they had no place to go but at the dog," she said.

Meanwhile, neighbors have trapped at least four cats in a week and a half and turned them over to the Humane Society.

Fire engulfs airport shuttle bus

Seventeen passengers safely evacuated a shuttle bus along the H-1 freeway after the bus became engulfed in fire yesterday afternoon.

Capt. Richard Soo, spokesman for the Honolulu Police Department, said the entire bus was on fire when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters responded to the call at 12:25 p.m. and had the fire under control at 12:41 p.m. and extinguished by 1:37 p.m.

The driver of the VIP Transportation shuttle bus noticed smoke coming from the dashboard as the bus was heading eastbound on H-1. The driver stopped along the right shoulder lane after the Honolulu Airport offramp, and the passengers evacuated.

Soo said the passengers included recently arrived flight attendants and pilots. He said there were no injuries, and the passengers boarded another shuttle.

It is unknown what started the fire, Soo said, but it appeared that a mechanical problem on the bus may have been the cause.

Officials from VIP Transportation declined to comment on the fire.
