Pegasus to find out today
about Transpac sweep

Two new Australian-built boats are in a battle for overall corrected time honors in the Transpacific Yacht Race that is too close to call.

Philippe Kahn's Pegasus, already in Honolulu after logging the fastest elapsed time, finds out today whether it can claim Transpac's first sweep in eight years and only the fourth in modern times.

At yesterday evening's roll call, Seth Radow's Bull was 17 minutes, 4 seconds behind the pace and gaining time at an average speed of 8.6 knots.

Watabu, Hori hold on for Hawaii Junior golf titles

Casey Watabu and Ayumi Hori maintained first-round leads by winning the third annual Callaway Hawaii State Junior Championships yesterday at the Links at Turtle Bay.

Watabu shot a 72 in the first round and 77 in the second for a 2-over-par 146 over 36 holes. He beat Andrew Ching by two strokes for the boys title in the 15-18 age division.

Hori recorded a 75-74--149 to win the girls title over Leah Whiting by five strokes, while two-time defending champion Joan Shimozaki finished fifth.

Reyn Tanaka, Kayla Morinaga, Sean Maekawa, Britney Choy, Travis Inouye and Makana Sakihama also posted wins in their respective divisions.

Honolulu's Seki 8 back at Publinx Championship

Jim Seki of Honolulu shot a second-round 76 to bring his score to 6-over 148, eight off the pace, yesterday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in San Antonio.

Seki, who made the cut, is 34th in the field, behind leaders James Vargas of Miami and Nick Cassini of Athens, Ga.

Chaminade picks Conroy as new tennis coach

Dennis Conroy was named Chaminade University men's and women's tennis coach, the school announced yesterday.

Conroy, who has been the director of tennis at the Hale Koa Hotel in Honolulu since 1996, replaces Brent Skillicorn, who resigned last month.

"Dennis will bring a great deal of teaching experience and energy to our athletic department," Chaminade athletic director Aaron Griess said.
