Waikoloa hosts comic
and Thai royalty

THE only display of fire and pyrotechnics that "Saturday Night Live" church lady Dana Carvey experienced over the Fourth of July was at the Hilton Waikoloa's teppanyaki table at Imari Restaurant. So what was he doing in Waikoloa? Carvey's sister is married to a Big Isle man and they had a little reunion ... Getting even more of the royal treatment than the likable Carvey at Waikoloa, however, was the Royal Princess of Thailand and an entourage of 30. Hilton chef Nobuyuki Atsumi prepared large platters of his most creative sushi, which was served to the group in the Imari's private tea room ...

HERE'S one for his resume -- singer Jimmy Borges was the featured headliner at the July 4 finale of the Del Mar Fair in San Diego. He performed a tribute to Frank Sinatra, using the chairman of the board's own arrangements per an agreement with Frank before his death. The U.S. Navy Band backed Borges, who was preceded at the fair by some names even bigger than his. Well, far bigger than his, actually. They included Tom Jones, Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, K.C. and the Sunshine Band and Dwight Yoakam. Among the Hawaii folks in the audience of over 150,000 were Gail & Archie Thornton. The ad execs were celebrating the birthday of Gail and America. Borges made her day by dedicating the final song to her ...

JUST managed to catch ex-Channel 9 sportscaster Neil Everett as he was on his way to the airport to head back to Bristol, Conn., where he toils for ESPN. He's been told he'll host his first "Sportscenter" on July 28 but the question remains if he'll keep the beard he let grow here, risking comparisons to Charley Steiner, or shave it off. I'm betting he shaves it off ...

Jacko and Bucko

AFTER the moving ceremony preceding the scattering of the ashes of late promoter Kimo McVay at the Outrigger last week, there was much schmoozing among friends who don't see each other all that much. When former Kahala Kai photo concessionaire Henry Woltag was told Michael Jackson had been in town and was looking for him, one bystander asked, "You know Michael Jackson?" "Of course, old boy," the dapper Brit answered, and I don't think the startled bystander ever found out Henry was referring to the fellow Brit talk show host from L.A. with the same name as the moon walker ... And Peggy Buchwach, widow of former Advertiser managing editor Buck Buchwach, startled some by announcing she'd dropped the Advertiser and was now subscribing to the Star-Bulletin. Was Bucky spinning in his grave? "Today he would have approved," said Peggy ...

Still Pecking around

ONE of the titular heads of the defunct Peck Sims Mueller Advertising, Rich Peck, is coming back. His new company is PEC&K. Asked why, he had the ready quip that BBD&O was already spoken for ... James Woods was on the NBC "Today" show yesterday morning showing a clip from his latest film, the multi-million dollar digitized flick made in Hawaii, "Final Fantasy." It was screened for a VIP audience yesterday and opens to the public tomorrow ...
